  Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I bring my own dog?
A. Yes, you can bring your own dog, but it must be under control without you shouting or continuously blowing a whistle. Also, the dog must work close (30 -40 yards). We would advise that if you do not have a well trained, well conditioned dog, that you consider using one of our guides with his dog. You can hunt pheasants without a dog but why? We believe watching a well conditioned, well trained dog in the field, is a large part of the whole experience. In addition, a dog that will find and retrieve wounded game is invaluable as birds that are knocked down and unrecovered must be included in your bag limit.
Q. Do you have kennels?
A. We are currently building 8 outside dog kennels for the 2004-2005 season. They are not heated but have warm dry boxes for your hunting partner. Call ahead for kennel availability as some members actually keep their dogs on the property.
Q. Do you allow dogs in the lodge?
A. Absolutely not! No exceptions.
Q. What kinds of dogs do your guides have?
A. Our guides currently run a variety of hunting dogs. German Shorthaired Pointers, Brittainys, Labs, and English Pointers are all available.. If you would like to work behind a particular breed of dog - let us know and we will try and arrange it for you. Our guides are very professional and friendly - but they are also busy. If you have a preference for a guide please let us know your request as far in advance as possible and we will arrange it if we can.
Q. Are there any other game birds to hunt besides pheasant?
A. Yes. We are planning on both chukar partridge and bobwhite quail for the 2004-2005 season.
Q. Can we shoot rabbits or any other ground based or avian predators.
A. No. It is against the law to shoot hawks or eagles of any kind - and they are numerous. We do not allow shooting of anything on the ground for the safety of the other hunters and the dogs. Pheasants are known to run -they do it in North Dakota and they do it here. Please do not shoot pheasants on the ground - my dad always said it is like hitting a woman!
Q. Do we have to have a guide go with us?
A. Members and non-members who have been on the property previously and know the bounderies are not required to have a guide. We would advise first time visitors to hire a guide. It is not mandatory, but it will greatly increase your chances to harvest the birds you want to harvest and will add greatly to the whole experience. They can give direction on how to hunt a particular area, answer questions, and show you things that will make your hunting experience much more enjoyable.
Q. Do we need a license to hunt on the property?
A. No. There are no licenses necessary. Hunters under 14 must have their hunter safety number when they fill out the release form.
Q. Are the hunts safe?
A. We have a safety form in which you must read before beginning your hunt. All of the guides carefully watch the gun handling and shooting. Any individual sho does not follow safe actions will be removed from the hunting party. Shooting glasses are recommended. Or slogan is : Be safe and have fun.
Q. Do I need blaze orange clothing?
A. Yes. State law does not require it, but our policy does require that all hunters and those accompanying them into the field to wear blaze orange. We prefer that you wear at least a blaze orange cap. Caps and vests are available for purchase in the bunkhouse. This is a new rule for 2004-2005. Please help us be safe by wearing blaze orange while you are hunting.
Q. Do you have a place where I can shoot targets?
A. Yes. We are currently planning on a trap range being completed by fall of 2004. Until then we have a small sporting clays range set up.
Q. What kind of guns do you recommend?
A. We recommend 12 and 20 guage shotguns. The action is a matter of choice. We would prefer you not use 28 guage and .410 guage as to many pheasants are crippled and lost with these guns.
Q. What kind of ammunition can I shoot?
A. You must shoot 4, 5, or 6 shot. Larger shot can ruin a pheasant more easily and smaller shot wounds to many birds. Please try and shoot a high quality hard hitting shell that will bring down your birds cleanly. Steel shot or non toxic is not required. Shells in 12 and 20 gauge are usually available for purchase on the property. Please let us know in advance if you are going to need to purchase large quanities of ammunition from us.
Q. What types of cover do you hunt?
A. We have a variety of cover - in addition to the fact that it changes drastically as the season progresses. We will be hunting various crops, corn, salt grass, alfafa, sage brush, rabbit brush, Wheat, tree lines and fence rows. We are in the pheasant business, therefore we cultivate the habitat that is most desireable to pheasants.
Q. We are renting the lodge. What time can we check in and what time must we leave?
A. Check-in is at 2 p.m. Check out is at 12 noon. We are very flexible on this, but need to keep in consideration if there are other people coming or going from the lodge. Sometimes an early checkin or late checkout can be arrange with an extra charge for your group.
Q. Do you hunt public or private land?
A. We only hunt private land that we either own or lease for our exclusive use.
Q. Do you provide alcoholic beverages?
A. No, but you can bring your own. Drinking is allowed only after the hunt is over for the day. No drinking after 1:00a.m. We do provide soft drinks on the property.

Q. If we are staying in the lodge, do we bring our own towels or food?
A. We provide all linens for the guests in the lodge. You do not need to bring any towels or bedding. The meal arrangements will be agreed on prior to your visit. You can bring your own or we can cater your meals at a reasonable cost.
Q. Can I bring my children?
A. The minimum hunting age in Utah is 14, so if a parent feels the child can safely handle a firearm, we usually let them hunt. Those families and groups staying in the lodge are, of course, welcome to bring the whole gang. That is what is is for. Please consider the lodge for your family reunion or group gathering.
Q. How soon do I need to book the hunt?
A. The sooner the better. Weekends and holidays are booked well in advance. In addition, members of the club can book up to 6 months in advance. Non-members can not confirm a date until they are within 14 days of the desired date.
Q. How do we get our game home?
A. Bring a cooler along and we will pack it for you. It can also be shipped to your destination for an extra fee. We also have 48 quart coolers for sale at the lodge. A 48 quart cooler will hold approximately 18-20 pheasants.
